Paul Mendes-Flohr

Paul Mendes-Flohr was a cofounder and former President of the Global Lehrhaus, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning as a shared, ethical, and deeply human endeavor.

He was a Professor Emeritus at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and The University of Chicago, and a leading scholar of modern Jewish intellectual history, modern Jewish philosophy and religious thought, German intellectual history, and the history and sociology of intellectuals. He was the world’s foremost scholar of Martin Buber, whose dialogical philosophy he not only interpreted with brilliance but embodied in his life and teaching.

His major works included Martin Buber: A Life of Faith and Dissent and Cultural Disjunctions. Paul Mendes-Flohr is remembered as a devoted teacher and generous mentor, and as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
