The 2021 Richard Kaufman Virtual Seminar:

Topographies of Exile: Horizons of Hope and Healing

Emerging from a year in exile.

“Everyone must come out of his Exile in his own way.” — Martin Buber

The coronavirus and attempts to contain it have induced a miasmic sense of exile—loss of place, isolation, loneliness and disruption. The Lehrhaus Institute is proud to present a seminar that will reflect upon this year in exile by exploring typographies of exile – in poetry, fiction, theology, painting, humor, and philosophical ruminations.

As we envision an emergence from the pandemic, we will also address the overarching question of Quo vadis—whither we should march to heal the medical, social and political scars wrought by the pandemic.

"It was undoubtedly the feeling of exile, that sensation of a void within which never left us, that irrational longing to hark back to the past or else to speed up the march of time, and those keen shafts of memory that stung like fire.”

- Albert Camus, The Plague
